Blog 209. Soft and Hard

Blog 208. How Do We Use Words?

This Blog was born from a discussion I had with someone close to me, a discussion about “hard and soft.” Perhaps, as Forrest Gump says, “Maybe it’s both. Maybe it’s both.”

1 There was a long (h0752. אָרֹךְ ’ârôḵ) war between the house of Saul and the house of David. And David grew stronger and stronger, while the house of Saul became weaker (h1980. הָלַךְ hâlaḵ) and weaker (h1800. דַּל ḏal).

  • (more literally, instead of “weaker and weaker,” it is “walking and helpless/poor.” And this leads one to remember what Amalek did to the Israelites AND YHWH’scomment about Amalek.
  • ⦁ Deuteronomy 25:17-19
  • 17 “Remember what Amalek did to you on the way as you came out of Egypt, 18 how he attacked you on the way when you were faint and weary, and cut off your tail, those who were lagging behind you, and he did not fear God. 19 Therefore when the LORD your God has given you rest from all your enemies around you, in the land that the LORD your God is giving you for an inheritance to possess, you shall blot out the memory of Amalek from under heaven; you shall not forget.
  • ⦁ Exodus 17:15-16
  • 15 And Moses built an altar and called the name of it, The LORD Is My Banner, 16 saying, “A hand upon the throne of the LORD! The LORD will have war with Amalek from generation to generation.”
  • Is it “coincidence” that Saul’s failure had to do with how he dealt with Amalek? AND was this a part of why David spared Saul, on multiple occasions, that David recognizes Saul’s “walking and helpless,” and David did not want to be seen like Amalek? “Don’t kick a man while he is down.” – REMEMBER THIS QUOTE – “Don’t kick a man while he is down.” because it explains SO MUCH of who YHWH is, from my perspective. I have written many times before, but I cannot see that I have uploaded it into LogandSpeck, that the understanding of “no double jeopardy.” It is a guiding principle of YHWH.
  • ⦁ Acts 13:22 And when he had removed him, he raised up David to be their king, of whom he testified and said, ‘I have found in David the son of Jesse a man after my heart, who will do all my will.’
  • The idea of “no double jeopardy” is explained by Paul in Romans 8. If we are “in the Spirit,” we carry within us the consequences of our actions (remember the post 14. Synthetic Grasp of Life), with each of the shortcomings of mankind, the Hebrew word includes the action and the consequences of the action. Thus if we carry within us guilt and shame, these in themselves are our consequences, and it would be “double jeopardy to impose additional punishment on top of that. YHWH and only YHWH knows our hearts. YHWH knows whether we have true remorse
  • ● Jeremiah 44:10

  • 14 And it shall be said,
  • “Build up, build up, prepare the way,
  • remove every obstruction from my people’s way.”
  • 15 For thus says the One who is high and lifted up,
  • who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy:
  • “I dwell in the high and holy place,
  • and also with him who is of a contrite and lowly spirit,
  • to revive the spirit of the lowly,
  • and to revive the heart of the contrite.
  • 16 For I will not contend forever,
  • nor will I always be angry;
  • for the spirit would grow faint before me,
  • and the breath of life that I made.
  • 17 Because of the iniquity of his unjust gain I was angry,
  • I struck him; I hid my face and was angry,
  • but he went on backsliding in the way of his own heart.
  • 18 I have seen his ways, but I will heal him;

and I made the stench of your camp go up into your nostrils;

yet you did not return to me,”

declares the LORD.

⦁ Habakkuk 3:15

15 You trampled (h1869. דָּרַךְ ḏâraḵ) the sea with your horses,

the surging of mighty waters.

  • One of many messages from the life of Yeshua/Jesus was to demonstrate that being tender of heart is not an indication of being weak. One can truly care for those less-well-off and choose to love and serve, yet still choose the sacrificial way that brings pain or even death. His “Way” was soft in a manner of speaking, tender, but hard in another manner. His Way was indeed the one of the Narrow Gate.

⦁ Matthew 7:12-13

12 “So whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets.

13 “Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many.

⦁ Luke 13:23-27

23 And someone said to him, “Lord, will those who are saved be few?” And he said to them, 24 “Strive to enter through the narrow door. For many, I tell you, will seek to enter and will not be able. 25 When once the master of the house has risen and shut the door, and you begin to stand outside and to knock at the door, saying, ‘Lord, open to us,’ then he will answer you, ‘I do not know where you come from.’ 26 Then you will begin to say, ‘We ate and drank in your presence, and you taught in our streets.’ 27 But he will say, ‘I tell you, I do not know where you come from. Depart from me, all you workers of evil!’

  • The direction that the Way leads is upside-down from the world’s way of thinking. It is the way of the contrite heart, the way of walking, not of power and speed. The powerful must not oppress the tender. Instead, leaders are to wash feet; be servant-leaders.

⦁ 1 Samuel 8:4-22

4 Then all the elders of Israel gathered together and came to Samuel at Ramah 5 and said to him, “Behold, you are old and your sons do not walk in your ways. Now appoint for us a king to judge us like all the nations.” 6 But the thing displeased Samuel when they said, “Give us a king to judge us.” And Samuel prayed to the LORD. 7 And the LORD said to Samuel, “Obey the voice of the people in all that they say to you, for they have not rejected you, but they have rejected me from being king over them. 8 According to all the deeds that they have done, from the day I brought them up out of Egypt even to this day, forsaking me and serving other gods, so they are also doing to you. 9 Now then, obey their voice; only you shall solemnly warn them and show them the ways of the king who shall reign over them.”

Samuel’s Warning Against Kings

10 So Samuel told all the words of the LORD to the people who were asking for a king from him. 11 He said, “These will be the ways of the king who will reign over you: he will take your sons and appoint them to his chariots and to be his horsemen and to run before his chariots. 12 And he will appoint for himself commanders of thousands and commanders of fifties, and some to plow his ground and to reap his harvest, and to make his implements of war and the equipment of his chariots. 13 He will take your daughters to be perfumers and cooks and bakers. 14 He will take the best of your fields and vineyards and olive orchards and give them to his servants. 15 He will take the tenth of your grain and of your vineyards and give it to his officers and to his servants. 16 He will take your male servants and female servants and the best of your young men and your donkeys, and put them to his work. 17 He will take the tenth of your flocks, and you shall be his slaves. 18 And in that day you will cry out because of your king, whom you have chosen for yourselves, but the LORD will not answer you in that day.”

The LORD Grants Israel’s Request

19 But the people refused to obey the voice of Samuel. And they said, “No! But there shall be a king over us, 20 that we also may be like all the nations, and that our king may judge us and go out before us and fight our battles.” 21 And when Samuel had heard all the words of the people, he repeated them in the ears of the LORD. 22 And the LORD said to Samuel, “Obey their voice and make them a king.” Samuel then said to the men of Israel, “Go every man to his city.”

He allows us our choices. And we live out our consequences.
