Impression – כאשר like which; just as cognate permutations (intensive effort)

  • There may be (intensive effort) for whomever is involved in the action of the passage, or it may be an overall “flag” to the reader that the passage overall reflects intensive effort.

You can see כאשר is a very common occurrence in TaNaKh, and this is without any modifications. We won’t do them all – there are plenty more for you to “seek and find.” Most often it does not appear with a Strong’s number, as if insignificant, but you may get a different opinion after reading. 1 And the LORD visited Sarah as He had said, and the LORD did for Sarah as He had spoken. 2 For Sarah conceived and bore Abraham a son in his old age, at the set time of which God had spoken to him. 3 And Abraham called the name of his son who was born to him—whom Sarah bore to him—Isaac. 4 Then Abraham circumcised his son Isaac when he was eight days old, as God had commanded him.

  • כאשר like which; just as cognate permutations (intensive effort)
  • This brings to mind Mark 5:30 and Luke 8:46 where Yeshua/Jesus feels the power going out of him when the woman with prolonged bloody discharge was healed.
  • These passages with כאשר suggest to this writer that the LORD works hard, with intensive effort, at making things happen in the individual lives of mankind – he did not just “set things in motion” at Creation and then step back, but he looks at each child every hour of every day. See also John 5:17. The LORD puts effort into each of our lives. It must be both very sad and very frustrating to him when we put no effort in return. To me, this exploration is a real eye-opener. 😲
  • A few more thoughts in this regard. It seems to me that we as humankind think that just because God is “omnipotent,“ that he doesn’t have to make any effort at the things that he does. But this exploration would suggest that is not the case. I think the movie Joshua does a good job of portraying this, the power going out of him with healing. This has really sent me to thinking.
  • Those of you who know me know that I’m methodical about how they go about coming to these definitions with the cognate permutation groups. I don’t go into them ahead of time anticipating what the findings will be. I did not set this up this way, but I let the Scriptures speak to me.

  • Make your own interpretation, but to me in verse 51, I see that it it is an intensive effort for Laban and Bethuel to give up Rebekah to this stranger and send her away to a distant land, perhaps never to see her again (and perhaps the see the beginnings of a recognition of the LORD’s influence in the lives of people); in verse 52, I get a picture of recognition on the servant’s part of the intensive effort the LORD puts into the lives of those who follow him.

⦁ Genesis 27:4-9

4 And make me savory food, such as I love, and bring it to me that I may eat, that my soul may bless you before I die.”

5 Now Rebekah was listening when Isaac spoke to Esau his son. And Esau went to the field to hunt game and to bring it. 6 So Rebekah spoke to Jacob her son, saying, “Indeed I heard your father speak to Esau your brother, saying, 7 ‘Bring me game and make savory food for me, that I may eat it and bless you in the presence of the LORD before my death.’ 8 Now therefore, my son, obey my voice according to what I command you. 9 Go now to the flock and bring me from there two choice kids of the goats, and I will make savory food from them for your father, such as he loves.

⦁ Genesis 27:14-19

14 And he went and got them and brought them to his mother, and his mother made savory food, such as his father loved. 15 Then Rebekah took the choice clothes of her elder son Esau, which were with her in the house, and put them on Jacob her younger son. 16 And she put the skins of the kids of the goats on his hands and on the smooth part of his neck. 17 Then she gave the savory food and the bread, which she had prepared, into the hand of her son Jacob.

18 So he went to his father and said, “My father.”

And he said, “Here I am. Who are you, my son?”

19 Jacob said to his father, “I am Esau your firstborn; I have done just as you told me; please arise, sit and eat of my game, that your soul may bless me.”

⦁ Genesis 30:25

25 And it came to pass, when Rachel had borne Joseph, that Jacob said to Laban, “Send me away, that I may go to my own place and to my country.

  • You are likely seeing many occurrences of translation of כאשר as “when.” I want to challenge this interpretation. Though in English, “just as” could mean, “at the time of,” if you look at the true meaning, it is “like which,” which is not a time relationship, but a meaning like, “in the same manner as.” SO what transpires in this verse is  a recognition that Rachel has just undergone (intensive effort) in giving birth to Joseph, AND  that Jacob is communicating to Laban that even though he anticipates having to make an (intensive effort) to return with wives and children to his country and face a threat from Esau. It could possibly also indicate that  Jacob also recognizes this will be an (intensive effort) for Laban to give up his daughters and grandchildren. Clearly, if none of these connects with you, it should be a communication to you as reader that this is a life situation that involves (intensive effort) and should be a flag that there may be heightened emotions involved.

● Isaiah 65:8

8 Thus says the LORD:

As the new wine is found in the cluster,

And one says, ‘Do not destroy it,

For a blessing is in it,’

So will I do for My servants’ sake,

That I may not destroy them all.

  • Reminiscent of two passages: ➀ Parable of wheat and tares ➁ Discussion between the LORD and Abraham about the upcoming destruction of Sodom.
  • But, what does it suggest in regard to (intensive effort)?
  • 2 Peter 3:9
  • 9 The Lord is not slack concerning (His) promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.
  • And two more connected verses: See Ecclesiastes 8:11 and Psalm 50:21.
  • My interpretation; accept or reject as you will. Just as we spoke about our misunderstanding about his Omnipotence, we misunderstand his Longsuffering/Patience. It is hard work for the LORD, it seems to me… the biggest attribute that he demonstrates to us may indeed be his restraint.  And to me, that suggests one more statement by Yeshua/Jesus at Gethsemane:
  • Matthew 26:52-54
  • 52 But Jesus said to him, “Put your sword in its place, for all who take the sword will perish by the sword. 53 Or do you think that I cannot now pray to My Father, and He will provide Me with more than twelve legions of angels? 54 How then could the Scriptures be fulfilled, that it must happen thus?”
  • The LORD puts (intensive effort) into making certain that all of mankind recognizes his restraint, for which we should be eternally grateful. Are we? ((To me, this is also a reflection of the misunderstanding that I had and most Christians have about Elijah – the prophet who called down fire with his prayer – Read 1 Kings 19:1-21. There is unbelievable power in the LORD, but his greatest attribute is that of restraint, his still, small voice. Where else is it better demonstrated than in his Rainbow Covenant after the flood?  Genesis 9:11-17 ➔ h7198. קֶשֶׁת qešeṯ is God’s bow in the cloud.
  • Impression – קדש set apart; holy סכת concentrate; attend without distraction יסדestablish; foundation קשת bow cognate permutations (attend and prepare) – the focus of attention/preparation can be positive or negative
  • This is “holiness.” This is concentration. This requires (intensive effort) on the part of the LORD. There are approximately 8.2 billion people in the world as of 2025. And he treats us all as his children. 😳 John 5:17 “My Father is always working.”
  • That we are not destroyed does not mean that our behavior is acceptable to a Holy God. It means that we have a God of restraint.
  • PLEASE RECOGNIZE – אסר is in the same group as אשר, thus כאסר “like restraining” ↔︎ כאשר “like which; just as.”
  • And please, I encourage the reader, that this trait is what we MUST instill into our people, our children… restraint.

⦁ Jeremiah 42:1-3

1 Now all the captains of the forces, Johanan the son of Kareah, Jezaniah the son of Hoshaiah, and all the people, from the least to the greatest, came near 2 and said to Jeremiah the prophet, “Please, let our petition be acceptable to you, and pray for us to the LORD your God, for all this remnant (since we are left but a few of many, as you can see), 3 that the LORD your God may show us the way in which we should walk and the thing we should do.”

381. Yirmeyahu 42:18 (Mikraot Gedolot)

⦁ Jeremiah 42:18

18 “For thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: ‘As My anger and My fury have been poured out on the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so will My fury be poured out on you when you enter Egypt. And you shall be an oath, an astonishment, a curse, and a reproach; and you shall see this place no more.’

382. Yirmeyahu 43:12 (Mikraot Gedolot)

⦁ Jeremiah 43:12

12 I will kindle a fire in the houses of the gods of Egypt, and he shall burn them and carry them away captive. And he shall array himself with the land of Egypt, as a shepherd puts on his garment, and he shall go out from there in peace.

383. Yirmeyahu 44:13 (Mikraot Gedolot)

384. Yirmeyahu 44:17 (Mikraot Gedolot)

⦁ Jeremiah 44:13-17

13 For I will punish those who dwell in the land of Egypt, as I have punished Jerusalem, by the sword, by famine, and by pestilence, 14 so that none of the remnant of Judah who have gone into the land of Egypt to dwell there shall escape or survive, lest they return to the land of Judah, to which they desire to return and dwell. For none shall return except those who escape.’”

15 Then all the men who knew that their wives had burned incense to other gods, with all the women who stood by, a great multitude, and all the people who dwelt in the land of Egypt, in Pathros, answered Jeremiah, saying: 16 ”As for the word that you have spoken to us in the name of the LORD, we will not listen to you! 17 But we will certainly do whatever has gone out of our own mouth, to burn incense to the queen of heaven and pour out drink offerings to her, as we have done, we and our fathers, our kings and our princes, in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem. For then we had plenty of food, were well-off, and saw no trouble.

385. Yirmeyahu 44:30 (Mikraot Gedolot)

⦁ Jeremiah 44:30

30 “Thus says the LORD: ‘Behold, I will give Pharaoh Hophra king of Egypt into the hand of his enemies and into the hand of those who seek his life, as I gave Zedekiah king of Judah into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, his enemy who sought his life.’”

386. Yirmeyahu 48:13 (Mikraot Gedolot)

⦁ Jeremiah 48:13

13 Moab shall be ashamed of Chemosh,

As the house of Israel was ashamed of Bethel, their confidence.

387. Yirmeyahu 50:15 (Mikraot Gedolot)

388. Yirmeyahu 50:18 (Mikraot Gedolot)

⦁ Jeremiah 50:15-18

15 Shout against her all around;

She has given her hand,

Her foundations have fallen,

Her walls are thrown down;

For it is the vengeance of the LORD.

Take vengeance on her.

As she has done, so do to her.

16 Cut off the sower from Babylon,

And him who handles the sickle at harvest time.

For fear of the oppressing sword

Everyone shall turn to his own people,

And everyone shall flee to his own land.

17 “Israel is like scattered sheep;

The lions have driven him away.

First the king of Assyria devoured him;

Now at last this Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon has broken his bones.”

18 Therefore thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel:

“Behold, I will punish the king of Babylon and his land,

As I have punished the king of Assyria.

389. Yechezkel 1:16 (Mikraot Gedolot)

8 And in the morning the word of the LORD came to me, saying, 9 “Son of man, has not the house of Israel, the rebellious house, said to you, ‘What are you doing?’ 10 Say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord GOD: “This burden concerns the prince in Jerusalem and all the house of Israel who are among them.“‘ 11 Say, I am a sign to you. As I have done, so shall it be done to them; they shall be carried away into captivity.’

398. Yechezkel 16:59 (Mikraot Gedolot)

18 So I spoke to the people in the morning, and at evening my wife died; and the next morning I did as I was commanded.

20 Then I answered them, “The word of the LORD came to me, saying, 21 ‘Speak to the house of Israel, “Thus says the Lord GOD: ‘Behold, I will profane My sanctuary, your arrogant boast, the desire of your eyes, the delight of your soul; and your sons and daughters whom you left behind shall fall by the sword. 22 And you shall do as I have done; you shall not cover your lips nor eat man’s bread of sorrow.

9 Also He said to me, “Prophesy to the breath, prophesy, son of man, and say to the breath, ‘Thus says the Lord GOD: “Come from the four winds, O breath, and breathe on these slain, that they may live.”’” 10 So I prophesied as He commanded me, and breath came into them, and they lived, and stood upon their feet, an exceedingly great army.

9 “But when the people of the land come before the LORD on the appointed feast days, whoever enters by way of the north gate to worship shall go out by way of the south gate; and whoever enters by way of the south gate shall go out by way of the north gate. He shall not return by way of the gate through which he came, but shall go out through the opposite gate. 10 The prince shall then be in their midst. When they go in, he shall go in; and when they go out, he shall go out. 11 At the festivals and the appointed feast days the grain offering shall be an ephah for a bull, an ephah for a ram, as much as he wants to give for the lambs, and a hin of oil with every ephah.

11 (It shall be) for the priests of the sons of Zadok, who are sanctified, who have kept My charge, who did not go astray when the children of Israel went astray, as the Levites went astray.

🄰 Please notice that the word Israel ישראל includes the cognate permutationgroup כאשרand Israel would be similar to ל (to; toward) plus כאשר (intensive effort). Also, remember that idea of restraint that is included.
